..General Introduction::

Buddhist Education and Social Development Centre, Nepal (BESDEC/Nepal) is a non-governmental, non -political and non- profitable social organization. Various professionals and social activities established it in 2003 in Kathmandu. The prime theme of the organization is “Development for Peace". The organization is concerned with the upliftment of Buddhist Education as well social development activities in the prison, rural, and urban communities of the country. Similarly, BESDEC/Nepal is devoted in creating the mental peace to the prisoners, support helpless, as well as to promote health, educational, environmental and economic status of different communities in Nepal through the norms and values of Buddhism.

BESDEC/Nepal has been working since its establishment period in the wave of mental support, health improvement, and environment conservation education promotion. Mainly BESDEC/Nepal aware the people focusing on gender equity, public health, child and adult education, environmental and natural resources management, motivating people for fair working condition, sustainable development and income generation activities. BESDEC/Nepal aims to create a just and peaceful world where all the people share a common platform irrespective of their creed, religion, colour, race and sex.

BESDEC/Nepal has been continuously working in the four prisons, namely Bhadra Bandi Jail, Central Jail and Female Jail of Sundhara Kathmandu since its establishment. The constructing a sculpture of "Lord Buddha" in front of gate of Central Jail is the first and initial programme of BESDEC/Nepal. The aim of the establishment of sculpture is to spiritually encourage the jail inmates so that they can serve the nation as good as before. In usual day they can feel and understand about the harmony of love, peace, prosperity, humanity and the responsibility as being a man. Kill the crime not the criminal to make them able to change their life style.

A prison is a place in which individuals are physically confined or interned and usually deprived of a range of personal freedoms. Prison are conventionally institutions which from part of criminal justice system of a country, such that imprisonment or incarceration is the state for the commission of a crime.

But in our society, people have wrong view or opposite thinking about prison and prisoners. May be due to ignorance, negligence or may lack of knowledge, only by hearing the word prison, most of the people think that it is the place for criminal who did crime in their life, so they put inside a prison. The word crime itself is very horrible. Let’s take example, when we talk about hell we automatically have negative concept about it. Same like that about prison people don’t have positive thought. So, obviously, people avoid the work prison.

The concept of prison is differing from one another. Some people think prison is a place for the confinement of persons in lawful detention, especially persons convicted of crimes. Some people think prison is a place or condition of confinement or forcible restraint. It is also known that prison is like situation, a place of imprisonment or captivity. But in our opinion what is the true meaning of prison is that-prison is a correctional institution where persons are confined while on trial. in the word no one is perfect themselves, even a Lord Buddha had also mistake in his life, for example, is years he had mediation in wrong way, then after he realized he got right path of meditation and finally attend in Nirvana that’s why we have to learn positive from negative. We have to realize prison is not only a place for to kept criminals or murderers, but also a place of correctional institution, so that they can feel them selves independent after they released from prison. So BESDEC/Nepal is fully focused on its program for the prisoners through the uplifting the four major objectives, which are as follows:-

Mental Support : - Mediation and Non Violence Communication (NVC) Program
